Food Safety and Regulations
Food Safety Information
The Food Safety Information Council works to reduce the number of Australians who fall ill from food poisoning by giving consumers straightforward, practical guidance on safe food handling, storage and preparation.
According to the Australian Health Department, around 5.4 million Australians get sick each year from food contaminated with harmful bacteria or viruses. It’s an astonishing figure, especially given that Australia is considered to have one of the world’s safest food supplies thanks to strong collaboration between food producers, handlers, retailers and government regulators.
A significant portion of these illnesses can be traced back to everyday consumers. Many of us unintentionally mishandle food simply because we don’t have the right information. That’s the gap the Council is determined to close.
