Long weekend combines history and adventure
Leave behind the hustle and bustle and make this Queen’s Birthday long weekend about adventure, history and getting back to nature.
The Etheridge Shire is throwing open its gates and inviting people to experience all it has to offer – of course there is the usual vast and extreme beauty admired by the friendly locals but this weekend the region will also host several events, including the policing centenary at Forsayth and a four-wheel-drive adventure rally.
Etheridge Shire Mayor Will Attwood said the long weekend was the perfect time to visit the region, which includes tourist attractions like Undara Experience and Cobbold Gorge.
“The major event this weekend is the unveiling of a plaque at Forsayth recognising 100 years of policing in the town,” Cr Attwood said.
Cr Attwood said the Policing Centenary was an important event, recognising the relationship Police Officers and Aboriginal Trackers had with the region and the community.
The ceremony will be followed by a barbecue at the Forsayth Hotel.
“The next day will be all about adventure with the annual four-wheel-drive bush bash through to Agate Creek taking place,” he said.
“The long weekend is the perfect time to experience some of the great things that make our region so special – it won’t be long enough to see and do everything but it will give you a taste and make you want to come back again and again.”
Georgetown is the main hub of the Shire and is about five hours drive south-west of Cairns, with Forsayth a little further along the track.
Accommodation of varying standards is available, from camping through to the local hotels, while Cobbold Gorge and Undara Experience also offer a variety of options for the intrepid traveller.
